Tip 1 – You are better off going for the collectables postcards which have never been used as well as being in good condition.  These are the ones that tend to be worth considerably more than those that are written on.  But on the other hand going for the ones that have been used provides an insight to the kinds of lifes people were leading when they were written on.  Also when it comes to used postcards choose that that don’t just have interesting information on them but stamps as well.

Tip 2 – When you are out looking for postcards to add to your burgeoning collection then don’t forget to look out for the more rare ones.  The types we are talking about are the one’s used at Halloween or Christmas time as they tend to be difficult to find.  However they make a very sound investment if you collecting postcards is much more than just a hobby. 

Tip 3 – There are certain publishers of collectable postcards you should be looking out for when collecting these.  Those that have the mark of John Winsch or International Art Publishing are the most sought after of these.  Plus look carefully at who was the artiste to create the picture on the postcard.  Again there are certain artistes of these who command much higher prices for theirs than others including Ellen Clappsaddle, Frances Brundage and Samuel Schmuker to name but a few.

Tip 4 – It is actually worth investing some money in some good quality books relating to vintage postcards.  This will help you to not only identify the publishers and artistes you should be looking for but also specific designs.

Tip 5 – When it comes to where to look for collectables postcards along with your local antique stores consider visiting local auction houses and estate sales.  Plus one should never forget about searching online including auction sites like eBay.    Yes searching through stacks of cards at an antique store or estate sale may seem like hard work but you might be surprised at what you discover.
